THEMATIC AREA
Identification of students’ at risk
DESCRIPTION OF CONTENTS
The results of the investigation have shown that firstly, there is no impulsive behavior between school drop-outs and the consumption of cigarettes or alcohol. Secondly, anti-social behaviors and teacher support have also no effect on the drop-out rate. The research was conducted between the years 2009-2010 in Ankara. About 478 students from common high schools have participated. According to the results, the drop-out risks have decreased with the support of family and friends but increased because of impulsive behavior. In Addition, disciplinary penalties, consumption of alcohol and cigarettes, anti-social behaviors are factors which increase the school drop-out tendency. Teachers’ support is one of the factors which is able to change this situation. It is also found that there is no relationship between the gender of the students and so their school drop outs or their success at school.
COMMENTS ON THIS PUBLICATION
This research is important as it gives clues how to prevent violent behaviors at school. At the same time, the results have been reinforced with previous investigations, so a better overview is provided. It is stressed that teachers play an important role in order to solve these problems. Also, the proposal is reinforced as it shows that teachers are a form of a protector. Besides this, students who are supported by their families are less exposed to violence and this research has decreased the burden of the teachers.
