DESCRIPTION OF CONTENTS
The analysis of the integration process of immigrant minors in the education system shows 5 critical issues:
- difficult access to school and a late integration of immigrant children in the school system;
- late enrolment: placement of migrant children in lower than their age-appropriate grades, with a subsequent educational disadvantage compared to their peers ;
- underachievement: the indicators of achievement show a big gap between Italian and immigrant students;
- duration of attending school: many immigrant students have difficulties in attending secondary higher education;
- competence in Italian as second language: limited skills in Italian are the explanation for the above mentioned critical issues.
To solve these critical issues and to promote a comprehensive school the following actions are suggested:
- an accurate collection and analysis of data to improve our knowledge and planning, to comply with the duty/right to education, to take action in case of non compliance, to monitor the different schools and institutions on the territory and to prevent or mitigate the risk of over-representation and segregation;
- agreements among schools in the same area or town and partnerships among different areas to manage the enrolment of immigrant students in a shared and coordinated way;
- availability and diffusion of specific materials and targeted tools (multilingual material, education tools, targeted texts, specific projects, thematic documents …);
- refresher courses and training to help the teachers and the school personnel to work in a multicultural environment;
- diffusion of information documents and tools, recruitment of language and cultural mediators to facilitate the communication and the implication of immigrant families;
- development of efficient tools to teach Italian as second language;
- specific and targeted support tools to support students to attend higher education tracks;
- material diffusion and development of positive initiatives to acknowledge and optimize the previous skills of immigrant pupils and students as well as the knowledge of their native language;
- actions to promote intercultural education for all students to combat and prevent mutual stereotypes and prejudices, to teach mutual respect, to acknowledge the differences and common points of different cultures;
- development and implementation of an integration comprehensive model for a wider implication of the population in the civil life of a multicultural society through a better knowledge of our rights and duties and of the Constitution.
COMMENTS ON THIS PUBLICATION
The writing of Graziella Favaro is very interesting for completeness, clarity and concreteness. The author does not merely identify significant problems, but proposes concrete measures of intervention. I think that the proposals are all very interesting, but I specially underline the need to work in partnership with local authorities and institutions , so that there is a regulation of the entries to prevent foreign students to concentrate all in a school with serious difficulties for foreigners themselves, but also for Italian students and for teachers . A concentration of foreigners in a single school can produce the opposite effect for the integration of young people do not speak Italian . Another action that I believe is necessary to carry out training courses that put all school operators to operate in a multi-ethnic context . Finally I find very interesting to think about a path to citizenship and constitution that would bring non-Italian students acquisition of awareness of their rights and duties of citizens , including through the reading of our Constitution

Final Partners’ meeting

The fourth partners’ meeting took place in Florence (IT) on 15 December 2014. The meeting had the objective to check the activities carried out since the third meeting of the project and share and assess the in progress results. A special focus has been dedicated to the presentation of the strategies to solve the case scenarios.
